'Happy' Fernando Alonso hoping to benefit from potentially chaotic wet race

Alonso & his future in F1

Regardless of Alonso's lack of competitiveness, not just this year but over multiple seasons, he is still held in incredibly high esteem by his Spanish supporters. Stoffel Vandoorne starts 11th having failed to make the top-10 shootout. "We had been P13 three times in a row and today we took that step forward we needed".

"We definitely made a step forward at this race". In another way, this auto is supposed to be the Australian Grand Prix package and that delay on bringing the first improvements and having them not in the first race, having them here, probably put us in a hard position in the first couple of races.

"That is a positive thing, the correlation with the factory".

Alonso finished in the points in all four races and is sixth in the drivers' standings, ahead even of Max Verstappen of Red Bull. Alonso started with a fifth place in Australia and was seventh in each of the next three races - Bahrain, China and Azerbaijan.

The Spaniard narrowly missed out on being the "best of the rest" after qualifying just behind Kevin Magnussen's Haas.

Putin, Merkel back Iran deal
The deal was brokered after almost 20 months of negotiation between Iran and the United States, Germany, Britain, China, Russia and France, as well as the European Union.

He added: "Probably the downside of this position is still the gap, with the top six, they are in another league".

"Definitely this package is making me happy". The feeling was positive in the vehicle, and we ended up very close to Q3 - Fernando just made it - which shows the parts we've brought here are working well.

"This package is making me happy, but in another way, this vehicle, is supposed to be the Australian Grand Prix package - that delay, on the first improvement, and not having it at the first races, but having it here, has probably put us in a hard position in the first races. Now we need to bring more things as quickly as possible".

Alonso hopes he can deliver his home crowd with a memorable race on Sunday, with lights out at 2.10pm exclusively live on Sky Sports F1. Alonso, who skipped last year's Monaco Grand Prix to race the Indy 500, triumphed at the Six Hours of Spa last weekend to record his first race victory since 2013. Time will tell, and the first real test of our updated package will come in tomorrow's race.

"I'm happy for the support and hopefully tomorrow we put on a good show for them".
