What happens when AI sounds too human?

Android launches Shush and Wind Down to keep your phone off when it needs to be off

Most agree that unlike the regular speech patterns, which are commonly associated with voice assistants, the new one is hard to differentiate from a real human speaker.

The new visual experience is making its way to Google Assistant on Android first this summer, followed by iOS later in the year.

In the show, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google played a recording of the assistant independently calling a hair salon and a restaurant to make bookings by interacting with staff who had no idea that they were interacting with an artificial intelligence software instead of a real person.

In fact, you could be using your phone for other purposes while this call takes place in the "background".

Another feature called "shush" mode automatically turns on the "Do Not Disturb" function if someone turns their phone face down on a table.

There are a lot of really cool announcements coming out of the Google AI conference, including an impressive autocomplete system on Gmail that'll save you the effort of ever having to personalize messages to your closest friends again.

LG Electronics is introducing Google Assistant on its 2018 AI TV line-up, which will deliver cutting-edge AI features operated directly through the TV's remote control with no additional hardware required. Customers might make do with them for a while but at the end of the day, they'll prefer a natural sounding voice - especially if you're aiming to become an integral part of their day and their lives.

Nonetheless, everyone is excited about the new Google Duplex, with Engadget even saying that the Google AI Assistant may have beaten the Turing test. "We want to help people find the right balance and gain a sense of digital wellbeing", Pichai said.

The feature called "smart compose" uses machine learning to offer suggested ways to finish sentences users start typing.

"Presumably there will need to be some regulation on what a bot needs to do in terms of announcing that it is a bot - this is already visible in online forums for example like Reddit where the bot posting makes it clear that they are a bot", he said.

Google photos cannot just restore our old black and white photos, but also convert them to colour images.

Earlier this year, one of the new devices that Google showed off was what it calls a Smart Display. One thing that was missing from this feature was the ability to create custom routines as until now you could only use one of Google's presets such as I'm home, Good Night, and others.

Artificial intelligence expert Hussein Abbass of the UNSW Canberra raised issues about privacy and data collection. This was just about the day 1, still, 2 days and some major breakthroughs remain to be seen at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California.

One of them was truly unbelievable, as it made Google Assistant into a real assistant, calling up for appointments and reservations on behalf of you, and physically talking to real people on the other end of the phone so you don't have to. It went back and made improvements.
