United Kingdom momentum will bounce back, BoE's Carney says

BoE governor Mark Carney suggested in April that the central bank might not raise rates in May because of the mixed economic data, causing a sharp reversal in bets on a May hike.

While money markets are betting officials will keep their stance on hold at this meeting, investors will look for any split among Monetary Policy Committee members to determine the chances of an interest-rate increase later this year.

Kevin Doran, chief investment officer at AJ Bell, said that the Bank's announcement "heaps more pain on savers who have already lost a third of their purchasing power over the past 10 years as inflation has comfortably outstripped the meagre interest earned on their cash".

Before the decision, sterling was up as much as 0.4% at $1.3618. But it puts all this down to the first-quarter slump, which it suspects will be revised up to 0.3% from the initial estimate of 0.1%. Growth is seen at 1.7% each in next three years.

In the exceptional circumstances presented by Brexit, as specified in its remit, the MPC has been balancing any significant trade-off between the speed at which it intends to return inflation sustainably to the target and the support that monetary policy provides to jobs and activity. Competition among challenger banks, in combination with higher SWAP rates, appears to be fuelling this rise. Previously the cost of borrowing had been decided between the chancellor and the governor of the Bank.

However, if the bank chooses to unanimously keep interest rates on hold, there's the possibility that Sterling could endure a slump even lower.

Wet wipes ban: United Kingdom takes another major step to fight plastic pollution
The UK government is planning to "eliminate" wet wipes as part of an ongoing drive to cut down on plastic pollution. It is still considering new taxes to reduce the amount of single-use plastics waste.

The four external members are appointed to bring thinking and expertise from outside the Bank to the meetings. "The judgement of the majority of the committee is you wait to see for some evidence of that reasserting".

"We would also argue that there is never a ideal time to raise interest rates and expect the MPC to base its policy decisions on how it sees the economy developing in the short-to medium-term". The manufacturing production is expected to have shrunk by 0.2% this month. However, that all changed after figures showed the economy barely grew in the first three months of the year and inflation fell by more than anticipated.

However, the Bank described that as a "temporary soft patch" with "few implications" for the outlook for the economy.

While forecasts point towards the unemployment rate holding steady at 5.8% the Canadian Dollar could come under pressure if employment levels fall.

"The prospect of excess demand over the forecast period has reduced the degree to which it is appropriate for the MPC to accommodate an extended period of inflation above the target".

But the Bank's quarterly forecasts revealed there was some doubt around the underlying economic picture in the United Kingdom, clouded by the recent weather impact, with the Bank noting "greater-than-usual uncertainty" over consumer spending.
