California becomes first state to require new homes have solar power

California is on cusp of becoming the first US state to require solar panels on all new homes beginning in 2020.

The California Energy Commission approved new Building Energy Efficiency Standards on Wednesday, including the requirement for a PV array on new build homes. The state agency estimates that new homes consume 30% less energy than old ones with new energy code.

"We've been working with the builders for the last 10 years to get them comfortable with solar and they absolutely are". The plan to do this has been unanimously approved by the California Energy Commission.

Right now, roughly one in five new homes in the Golden State has rooftop solar panels.

The decision will boost the cost of building new houses by approximately $9,500- but could lower energy bills for everyone in the long-run, according to estimates provided by the CEC. Three years ago, California Gov.

There's good reason to think the requirement will become law across the whole state, as a number of Californian cities already insist on solar power being installed in new homes. They would still have to draw some of their electricity from the power grid.

Gerard Pique also took a dig at Real not giving them a guard of honour when he addressed the crowd. I wish him the best as a footballer and person.

California has positioned itself as the nationwide leader on clean energy, pushing for more electric vehicles on the roads and fewer emissions from residential and commercial buildings.

"We can not let Californians be in homes that are essentially the residential equivalent of gas guzzlers", Commissioner David Hochschild said ahead of the vote.

But Republican legislative leaders argue Californians can not afford to pay any more for housing in what is already an extremely expensive market.

"It will add thousands of dollars to the cost of home when a shortage of affordable housing is one of California's most pressing issues", the Times reported.

It does include exceptions when requiring solar panels isn't feasible - such as on a home shrouded in shade - or cost effective.

But remember that President Donald Trump slapped tariffs on solar equipment imported into the U.S.in January. Typical solar panel installations cost around $14,000 to $16,000, and these costs could be increased by further mandates for increased insulation and more energy efficient windows and appliances. Renewables accounted for 27 percent of total energy generation previous year, while solar generation made up 10 percent of the total, according to the Los Angeles Times.
