Delta flight evacuated because of smoke in cabin

A Delta Airlines flight from Detroit to Denver was evacuated after landing Tuesday evening at Denver International Airport

No injuries occurred due to smoke, but some passengers had minor injuries from the evacuation and were treated and released.

The plane's 153 passengers were evacuated via emergency exits located on the wing. Flight operations at the Denver airport were not impacted.

Airport spokeswoman Emily Williams said the plane was removed from the runway before 11 p.m.

"The oxygen masks never came down and people began to freak out", D.J. Semenza told CNN. Often when flying, passengers can smell trace amounts of jet fuel when the engines start, or while taxiing when and the wind is strong enough to blow exhaust gasses back onto the plane.

The smoke was created from hydraulic oil dripping onto an auxiliary power unit activated after the aircraft landed.

"Earlier tonight, Delta flight 1854 from Detroit landed safely at DEN", the airport wrote. "After a couple of minutes, the flight attendant was like, 'Everyone get low to the ground and cover your mouth with a blanket, or clothes, or whatever you have.' And maybe a minute later, they finally made the call to evacuate the plane".

"The security of Delta's staff and team is our top priority, and we apologize for its stress this case has generated", claimed a airline spokesman.

Passenger photos and accounts portray a more chaotic scene, including criticism of how the Delta crew handled the incident, which one woman said left "everybody dizzy". "When there are fumes coming out of vent & everybody dizzy, there is a problem & it's necessary to evacuate".

Smoke inside the cabin of a Delta Air Lines flight forced passengers to evacuate the plane via emergency slides and over-wing exits Tuesday in Denver.

The passengers were bussed to the terminal.
