Catch and Release: Caravan Asylum Seekers Closer to Living Freely In US

A group of women and children passed through to the USA side of the border with Mexico on Wednesday, part of the caravan of Central Americans seeking asylum in the United States.

In April, Sessions issued new guidelines to immigration judges requiring they get through 700 cases per year in order to cut down on the years-long immigration court backlog.

The latest group brought the total number of people who have crossed the San Ysidro Port of Entry between San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico, to 158, according to Alex Mensing, a project coordinator for Pueblo Sin Fronteras, the group that organized the so-called caravan.

Another 62 migrants were still waiting for a chance to begin the asylum process, he said.

President Donald Trump has tweeted that these migrants shouldn't be allowed into the country.

The protesters were agitated over the portrait of the Pakistan founder which a local BJP MP wanted removed. "No way, sir. On Thursday, hundreds of student protestors organised a dharna at the campus gate, the Hindustan Times reported.

All the while, they have known their pleas might be rejected.

Customs and Border Protection has said there was an uptick in Mexican asylum seekers in the week before Central Americans arrived, and Mexicans continued to congregate outside the inspection facility this week to wait their turn.

The department says the new positions in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas are part of the zero-tolerance policy Sessions earlier announced to deal with a new surge in apprehensions along the border.

Trump wants to tighten laws to make it harder for people to claim asylum, citing a more than tenfold rise in asylum claims versus 2011.

The Republican president's hard-line stance on immigration, both legal and illegal, has animated many of his core supporters even as his support among the broader American public hovers around 40 percent.
