UK's May tells lawmakers: Syria strikes were legal and moral

Latest Figures Show UK Unemployment Has Risen Above 2 Million

The lavish week-long Commonwealth meeting, split across landmark locations in London, is likely to be overshadowed by Mrs May's decision last Saturday to join USA and French air strikes on Syria in retaliation for a suspected poison gas attack.

May, who has regained confidence after winning support for her tough stance on Syria and Russian Federation, said she was driven by the need to decide quickly on joining the United States and France in Saturday's strikes, made in retaliation for a suspected gas attack. She is now enjoying global support for her action in Syria and against Moscow over a nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy in Britain.

Britain knows of no cases where British residents of the so-called "Windrush generation" from the Caribbean have been deported due to their lack of documentation, Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington said on Tuesday. "It was perfectly possible for the house to have been recalled in advance, why was this not done?"

"Mr. Speaker, this statement serves as a reminder that the Prime Minister is accountable to this parliament not to the whims of the U.S. President", said Jeremy Corbyn, Labour Party Leader. "It was about a limited and targeted effective strike that sought to alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the Syrian people by degrading the Syrian regime's chemical weapons capability and deterring their use", explained the British PM.

Much of the criticism directed towards the government is to do with the perception that the United Kingdom is merely following President Donald Trump's lead in order to foster goodwill ahead of the country's departure from the EU.

"We have always been clear that the Government has the right to act quickly in the national interest", Ms May said, calling the military action "not just morally right but also legally right".

The three allies have also vowed to strike again if chemical weapons are used in Syria again, reserving the right to do so without waiting for the results of any worldwide investigation or any United Nations Security Council resolutions.

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe also justified the military action in a speech Monday to the National Assembly, France's lower house of parliament.

That prompted calls for future debates on Syria.

Opinion polls suggest that most Britons do not support military action, with one by Survation taken after the strikes were launched showing 40 percent of the 2,060 people asked opposed the action. "If not, she's the one that will take the blame".
