Two weather warnings issued as wind and rain to batter Ireland

Sunshine makes a comeback

The weather warning will remain in force until tomorrow morning at 6am.

A separate rainfall warning was also issued for south Dublin, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Wexford and Wicklow.

Sunday saw Met Éireann issue two Status Yellow warnings (one wind, one rain) for eight counties, with accumulations of 25 to 50mm expected and some localised spot flooding possible. This warning is valid until 11am. Showers will follow for the rest of the day, some heavy.

"There will be rain on Wednesday morning in western counties counties, but this will should become more confined to the coastal areas in the afternoon".

Across the Irish Sea, temperatures in parts of Britain are expected to reach a sweltering 27C. Very mild or warm in places with moderate southerly breezes and highs of 14 to 18 degrees Celsius.

"The weekend will be largely dry and bright for many on Saturday with sunny spells in eastern areas. Coastal areas will be a bit fresher".

As for today and tomorrow, Met Eireann is forecasting that heavy and persistent rain will fall across the county.

"However, I wouldn't go as far as calling a heatwave".

"Friday will be cooler with a few showers about, especially in northern counties, but many places will be dry and bright".

According to BBC weather forecaster Barra Best, Storm Irene is making its way from Portugal and will hit the Emerald Isle later this afternoon. "We're only going to see these conditions last for a couple of days - a heatwave needs to have consistently high temperatures for a certain period".
