Russian hackers start targeting critical United Kingdom national infrastructure

It has denied previous accusations that it carried out cyberattacks on other countries.

Joyce said the alert is unrelated to the joint U.S., British and French airstrike in Syria that was prompted by a suspected chemical weapons attack by the Russian-backed regime of Bashar al-Assad.

The joint US-UK alert comes days after Home Secretary Amber Rudd warned that the UK had been hit by 49 cyberattacks from Russian groups in the last six months.

British and USA officials said they had "high confidence" that the Kremlin was behind the attacks.

Australia also admonished Russian Federation and accused Kremlin-backed hackers of cyberattacks on hundreds of Australian companies previous year.

"We don't have full insight into the scope of the compromise", said Jeanette Manfra, a cyber security official for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Specifically, the hackers were exploiting default passwords on users' routers, and exploiting unsecured devices in homes and business. An email message seeking comment from the Russian embassy in Washington, D.C., received no response. The report then offers technical solutions for those who are concerned about being hacked by Russian agents, beyond switching the device off and on again. But its alert cited only one specific product: Cisco's Smart Install software.

Law enforcement and cyber security minister Angus Taylor said a "significant" number of organisations were targeted in the wide-ranging attack reported by the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC).

It's warned that a Russian government campaign to exploit these devices threatens safety, security, and economic well-being of the USA and the UK.

"Commercially available routers were used as a point of entry, demonstrating that every connected device is vulnerable to malicious activity", Taylor said.

"The US government and the United Kingdom condemn the actions of the Russian government, and we hold the Kremlin responsible for these malicious cyber activities", she added. First, this type of effort has targeted millions of machines to spy on ISP customers, organizations and government agencies.

"Russian government-sponsored actors" accessing passwords, information through routers. But Russia does have history in this regard, as many security experts blame it for several cyber-sabotage attacks on Ukraine's power grid.
