Indian army soldier joins Hizbul Mujahideen

According to the police Idrees Mir was posted to Jharkhand and was unhappy about the move

An army man from the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI), who had gone missing from south Kashmir earlier this month, has quit the army and joined the terrorist outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, said media reports on Monday, April 16, quoting J&K police officials. Mir was to be posted to Jharkhand and was unhappy about the move, a PTI report said. He went missing while he was on vacation at home. In a separate incident, an Army porter was killed in cross-border shelling along the Line of Control in Uri of North Kashmir's Baramulla on Monday. "Details are being ascertained", Defence spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia told the daily.

If confirmed, he is the first soldier to join the ranks of militants in Kashmir.

It is common for young men in the Valley to announce their allegiance to militant outfits through social media by releasing pictures with weapons and in fatigues.

Past year in July, another armyman, Zahoor Ahmad Bhat from Pulwama district, fled from his Army post in Uri with an AK-47 rifle to join Hizbul Mujahideen. While Naveed joined Hizbul Mujahideen, Dar is associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba. A native of Wachi in Shopian, South Kashmir, Mir was posted in Bihar. The area has a significant presence of militants, especially of Hizbul Mujahideen. Mir had arrived in his village Safnagar in Shopian on April 12 and had been missing since Saturday night, police added.
