Wetherspoons shuts down all pub social media accounts

Following the announcement (on Twitter) this morning (16 April), the Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts for all 900 pubs across the United Kingdom have been suspended indefinitely, with Martin saying that no jobs would be affected by the move while also rejecting the idea that a large-scale social media presence was essential to promoting a brand.

The firm said its decision had been influenced by the "trolling" of MPs and concerns regarding the "misuse of personal data". Late previous year, Facebook also noted that when people spend a lot of time passively consuming information, as on a social media feed, "they report feeling worse afterward".

Mr Martin said: "I think generally I feel that in politics, and in business people vastly overestimate social media".

Wetherspoon chairman, Tim Martin, was a strong campaigner for leaving the European Union in 2016 and claimed that social media is "all a bit of marketing hype".

He told the BBC he had always thought the idea that social media was essential for advertising was untrue.

Bank of America reports strong Q1 results on deposit and loan growth
Personal Capital Advisors Corp acquired a new position in shares of Bank of America during the 3rd quarter worth $311,000. The stock of TCL MULTIMEDIA TECHNOLOGY HOLDINGS LTD. (OTCMKTS:TCLHF) registered an increase of 900% in short interest.

The company has nearly 900 pubs in the United Kingdom and Ireland, many of which have individual social media accounts associated with them.

Martin said the decision was made because people spend too much time on social media "and struggle to control the compulsion".

For your fix of Spoons-related news, you can subscribe to its magazine... or download the Wetherspoon app, which will still keep you glued to your phone, just not Facebook.

Given the company's Twitter account had a mere 44,000 followers and its Facebook page some 100,000 followers, hardly stellar numbers for a big brand, one could argue that the pub chain's departure for social media is a bit of a storm in a teacup. or should that be pint glass.
