Syrian army declares capturing last rebel bastion in Eastern Ghouta

"Areas of Jap Ghouta in rural Damascus have been absolutely cleansed of terrorism", a military spokesman additionally stated in a press release delivered on state tv.

Syrian TV showed police waving Syrian flags apparently on the edge of the town just east of Damascus, and said the "terrorist presence" in Douma will end "in a few hours".

The Syrian authorities and allied forces launched an enormous assault on February 18 to retake the enclave, which had been out of regime management since 2012.

The Syrian Observatory for Human rights, a British-based war monitoring group, says the campaign killed more than 1,600 civilians.

Early on Saturday, the American military, in collaboration with Britain and France, carried out what it routinely describes as "precision strikes" on three targets in Syria that it falsely claimed to be associated with the country's alleged chemical weapons arsenal, without producing any evidence.

The regime has been accused of carrying out a chemical weapons attack last week on the town of Douma, the final part of the enclave where rebels were balking at a Russian-brokered deal to evacuate them to northern Syria.

Assad had made the reconquest of Eastern Ghouta a strategic goal.

According to a draft text obtained by AFP, the resolution calls for humanitarian aid deliveries, enforcing a ceasefire and demands that the Syrian government engage in UN-led peace talks.

"Punishing the instrument of the crime whereas maintaining the legal - a farce", wrote Mohammad Alloush, a key member of Jaish al-Islam.

The report showed people waving Syrian flags, alongside those of Iran and Russia- the main allies of Syrian President Bashar Assad during years of the country's conflict - in the face of what many called "limited" or even "failed" strikes created to punish Assad for his alleged use of chemical weapons.

"Humanitarian operation in the Eastern Ghouta carries on despite missile strikes against Damascus carried out by the worldwide coalition", Maj.

A new group of rebels and other civilians left Syria's Douma on Friday, state media said, paving the way for the government to declare full control over the onetime opposition enclave.

The Syrian Army said a clean-up operation was underway in the battered enclave.

"Engineering models are beginning to clear the mines and explosives sewn by the terrorists within the city to permit the remainder of the models to safe the liberated areas and put together them for the return of civilians to their houses", the military spokesman stated.

It added that the army is preparing eastern Ghouta for tens of thousands who were displaced over the past two months during a crushing government offensive to retake the area.
