Sydney bushfire still out of control and may have been deliberately lit

A firefighter pulls a hose as an out-of-control grass fire burns at Holsworthy in Sydney Saturday

Volunteer and professional firies from the Coast have sped down the M1 today, to play their part in the operation to control a massive bushfire burning south of Sydney.

"We believe it might have been a deliberately lit fire", Inspector Mitch Newtown said on Saturday night.

The blaze was downgraded from watch-and-act to advice about 2am on Monday.

A blaze at Menai still continues to burn in a south easterly direction toward Barden Ridge - no homes are at risk but crews are on the ground focused on containing the fire.

Once pristine bushland has been ravaged by the fires.

Aerial footage showed the flames leaping through a forested area, with thick smoke blanketing nearby suburbs and a suburban street at a near standstill as motorists tried to leave.

Late yesterday, the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) said the fire had burnt about 2,430 hectares around Holsworthy and Menai, and some properties had been damaged.

"We have had reports of impact on properties in west Menai and Barden Ridge but our crews at the moment are exclusively focused on fighting the fire", he told AAP in the evening.

"Residents in Illawong, Bangor and Picnic Point are experiencing ember attack and should continue to monitor for any new spot fires in the affected areas".

Many residents in Menai chose to remain at their homes and were kept busy fighting ember attacks.

He said that Russian Federation has 'the necessary means for that and the Americans and their allies know that quite well'. The workers moreover accused the Islamic State extremist group of using mustard gasoline twice in 2015 and 2016.

"It was pretty scary", he told AAP when finally opening a beer, thankful his house came with sprinklers on the roof.

NSW Police have set up "Strike Force Carpi" with specialist forensic officers establishing a crime scene in Casula to investigate once circumstances allow.

Conditions are expected to aid the firefighting effort on Monday, with winds about half the strength they were on Sunday.

But high temperatures remain a cause for concern, Rural Fire Service Deputy Commissioner Rob Rogers warned.

Embers posed a serious threat to homes on Saturday night.

The flames briefly shut a section of the T8 train line, while several roads remain closed.

"Still quite a hard day ahead (on Monday)", he told the Nine Network.

"I think it's fair to say that it is highly suspicious, in the absence of any other cause like lightning", he said.

"Residents around that area should monitor the situation, take advice from firefighters in the area and know what they'll do if fire threatens", he said.
