Statewide bandh in Andhra Pradesh over special category status demand

Life affected in Andhra Pradesh by opposition-sponsored shutdown over special status issue

A state-wide bandh is being held in Andhra Pradesh today over the demand of special status for the state. The call for the shutdown has been supported by opposition parties such as Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), Jana Sena, Congress and the Left parties. The Opposition parties such as YSR Congress Party, Congress and Left parties have extended their support to the bandh.

The ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which has been fighting for the special status and implementation of the provisions of AP Reorganisation Act, is not participating in the shutdown.

Educational institutions remained shut and examinations scheduled for the day have been postponed in view of the stir.

TDP leader and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, however, condemned the bandh, saying bandhs were not welcome because they stall development.

Former Eagles CB Daryl Worley charged with six offenses
The football player was passed out in his vehicle Sunday morning near the teams' practice facility in South Philadelphia. Worley posted $25k bond and has a preliminary court hearing scheduled for May 1 according to ESPN's Tim McManus .

The SCS Sadhana Samithi also urged activists to drop students at their destinations and not to stop school buses during bandh.

Even Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) buses were off the roads. Leaders like N Chandrababu Naidu, Pawan Kalyan, Jaganmohan Reddy have been criticising the Modi government claiming that injustice has been done to the people of Andhra Pradesh. "It will make Modi happier", a leading daily quoted Naidu as saying. Reacting to this, the YSRC accused the Chief Minister of adopting "double standards".

Rambabu said Naidu should understand that bandh was a form of a democratic protest and he had no right to oppose it. Interestingly, ruling party Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which has taken on the Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre for its failure to grant the Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh and for its demand to implement the provisions of the AP Reorganisation Act, has opposed the bandh and has made a decision to not participate in it.
