Massive protests across nation over Unnao, Kathua rape cases

Police say the 15-year-old accused allegedly forced three pills of bhang down the victim’s throat in the first few moments of her captivity

The Kathua rape-murder case triggered massive controversy after the incident became heavily politicised.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal joined the protests along with Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal near Rajghat, where she is holding an indefinite hunger strike to demand the setting up of more fast-track courts to complete trials in rape cases of minors within six months. Two BJP ministers from Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's cabinet defended the accused and after massive outrage, were forced to resign from the cabinet.

The resigned ministers, Chaudhry Lal Singh and Chander Parkash Ganga had reportedly attended rallies in the support of the accused in the Kathua case.

Do you think that the issue of this case is an indicator of far bigger dangers to the Muslim community in the region?

Mr Mishra claimed that the BCI was told that the reason behind the lawyers' protests in Jammu was not to defend the accused but were instead focused against certain laws passed by the Jammu and Kashmir government.

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi stated that the BJP-government "speaks less and works more" and has taken speedy action regarding the Unnao and Kathua rape cases.

In 2012, the 23-year-old girl was brutally gang-raped in a moving bus in the national capital on December 16, a fortnight later she succumbed in a Singapore hospital. "It was wrong. We always batted for justice for the girl", she said.

"I want to assure the nation that no criminal will be spared".

Mir, defending his remarks, said he never raised questions on J-K police's probe in Kathua rape and murder case.

The little girl went missing on January 10 and a week later, her body, bearing torture marks and signs of sexual abuse, was recovered on 17 January.

"We, the Indian student and alumni community in the United Kingdom, are deeply horrified and demand immediate proceedings against the accused in both cases (Kathua and Unnao)".

Despite receiving open threats, the mother of 5-year-old daughter hasn't given up and her focus is reportedly on seeking justice for Asifa and her family.

In connection with the case, two FIRs have been filed: one against eight people for allegedly being involved in the crime and another has been filed against a group of lawyers who had allegedly stopped the police from filing chargesheet against the eight accused.
