Kenyan election commissioners resign

Three top officials of Kenya's elections body quit citing leadership failure

In a statement, the commissioners said that, under Chairman Wafula Chebukati, "the commission boardroom has become a venue for peddling misinformation, grounds for brewing mistrust, and a space for scrambling for and chasing individual glory and credit". The resignation of Consolata, Mwachanya and Kurgat means that Chebukati is left with only two Commissioners, Prof. "All that we need is a strengthened and robust secretariat", he said adding that the number of commissioners in other independent commissions should also be trimmed to five.

The trio, Vice-Chairman Consolata Nkatha, Commissioners Paul Kurgat and Margaret Mwachanya, told a hurriedly-convened press conference in Nairobi that for far too long and way too many times Wafula Chebukati, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman, has failed to be the steady and stable hand that steers the ship in hard times and gives directions when needed.

In a statement seen by TUKO.co.ke, Orengo demanded the disbandment of the entire commission since it has failed accountability, efficiency and accuracy tests as stipulated in the constitution.

"Henceforth, political parties should nominate IEBC Commissioners".

"We think that this is a culmination of leadership failure in the commission and its important that Chebukati takes action to resign from his office now, with the remaining two commissioners".

Three Kenyan election officials resigned on Monday, increasing chaos at the electoral Commission following last year's botched presidential vote that had to be rerun and was then boycotted by the opposition. By law, the commission must have four active members to carry out business.

The country's Supreme Court annulled the August presidential poll result saying the electoral board committed "irregularities and illegalities", harming the integrity of the election. "The question would be who stands to benefit in a situation where that audit is not conducted?"

Since previous year, Chebukati has been struggling to stamp authority in the commission and the latest twist of events could be the end of his controversial tenure in the commission. Abdi Yakub Guliye and Boya Molu.
