Kentucky Governor Apologizes for Associating Teacher Protests with Child Sexual Assault

APTOPIX Teacher Protests Kentucky

Matt Bevin apologized Sunday for saying that children were sexually abused because they were left home alone while teachers rallied to ask lawmakers to override his vetoes.

"I want to be in my classroom instructing future citizens, but I'm afraid that spending at the state level is getting worse and worse, and we need those dollars for a 21st-century education", said Stephanie Ikanovic, a teacher of 21 years who participated in the demonstrations, the Associated Press reported. He says "it is not my intent to hurt anybody in this process, but to help us all move forward together".

More than 30 Kentucky school districts closed Friday for the rallies. "I guarantee you somewhere today a child was physically harmed or ingested poison because they were home alone because a single parent didn't have any money to take care of them".

In the video, Bevin never explicitly mentioned his comments on sexual assault, instead he referred to what he called "unintended consequences" of schools closing.

At a video statement on Sunday, Bevin stated: & "I'm sorry each of youpersonally, that has been hurt by things I't explained".

"Clearly a tremendous number of people did not fully appreciate what it was that I was communicating or what it was that I was trying to say", Bevin said.

After the day's events, Bevin made the comment about teachers to a group of reporters outside the Capitol.

Chinese minister visits Japan for talks on N. Korea, regional issues
Trump tweeted on Thursday that he "would only join TPP if the deal were substantially better than the deal offered to Pres. The Japan-China Excessive-Stage Financial Dialogue was being held Monday in Tokyo for the primary time since August 2010.

Protesters succeeded in their efforts and legislators overturned Bevin's budget and tax vetoes on the final day of the 2018 legislative session.

Governor Bevin voiced his frustrations for what he believes is a disregard for what is best for children.

"This is the example that we want to send to our children, really?"

Attorney General Andy Beshear, D-Kentucky, also released a statement berating the governor's comments. I don't know how we can misunderstand his intent.

On Friday, Senate President Robert Stivers said he would hate it if Bevin's comments "marred" his accomplishments. "Governor Bevin is on the wrong side of history, and as his latest outburst shows, he's also on the wrong side of simple decency".

Matt Bevin has apologized to those offended by recent remarks insinuating that walkouts by teachers have left children unsupervised and vulnerable to sexual assault.

"The teachers and public employees he has insulted over the past year deserve much more than this". This rhetoric has crossed a line. "If we want to create a world without child abuse, we can not tolerate the governor's comments". Time and time again we hear this demeaning rhetoric spewed, attacking our public educators and public employees. "As a mother, suggesting children were abused as a prop for his political rhetoric is disturbing and absurdly in poor taste".
