The incident reportedly happened at Cobblestones, south of Gracetown and Cowaramup, near Margaret River, about three hours south of Perth.

Dozens of pro surfers are in the South West to take part in the Margaret River Pro, which is part of the World Surf League Tour.

Kiwi surfer Paige Hareb was one of the first back in the water at the Margaret River WSL event in Western Australia after a man was attacked by a shark nearby.

A man suffered leg injuries Monday after he was attacked by a shark off Australia's southwestern coast, forcing authorities to shut down a nearby global surfing competition.

He was treated on the beach by paramedics before he was flown by helicopter 250 kilometers (160 miles) to a hospital in the city of Perth, Bertoldo said.

Surf photographer Peter Jovic witnessed the attack from the beach.

"There was a lot more thrashing around after that, it was pretty hard to see what was going on".

Former champion surfer Mick Fanning escaped unscathed when a great white attacked his board as he waited to catch a wave.

As storms approach, Flash Flood Watch is issued
More than two inches of rain is expected to fall across Trumbull County in the next 12 hours. A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding.

"They got him to shore and started working on him to stem the bleeding".

The man was reported to be in a stable condition.

"We have been alerted of a shark incident that occurred near Gracetown", organisers said on Monday.

With all eyes on the nearby contest at Margaret River, WSL officials made a decision to put the event on hold-and considering Mick Fanning's close call at the J-Bay Open in 2015, it seems like a good call.

In a statement posted to its Facebook page following the incident, the WSL said it had chose to suspend the competition for an hour after "discussions with local authorities". "We have mitigation protocols in place and will be enhancing those when competition resumes".

"The safety of our surfers & staff is a top priority".

According to ABC, Hawaiian pro surfer John John Florence had a close shave with sharks while surfing in the area just before the competition. He put a drone in the air whose footage revealed two large sharks.
