Full Text - May on military strike against Syria

"They agreed it was vital that the use of chemical weapons did not go unchallenged, and on the need to deter the further use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime", May's office said in a statement after the two leaders spoke.

British Prime Minister Theresa May summoned her senior ministers to a special cabinet meeting on Thursday to discuss joining the United States and France in possible military action against Syria after a suspected poison gas attack on civilians.

Ministers agreed it was "highly likely" that Syria's President Bashar al-Assad was behind the attack.

"This is not about intervening in a civil war".

He added: "To Iran and to Russian Federation I ask - what kind of regime wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children?"

May said the strike was "limited and targeted" and came after intelligence indicated that Syrian military officials had co-ordinated a chlorine attack in the Damascus suburb of Douma on April 7.

Her predecessor, David Cameron, lost a vote on air strikes against Assad's forces in 2013, with many in Britain wary of entering another conflict, especially after an inquiry concluded that then-prime minister Tony Blair's decision to join the 2003 USA -led war against Iraq was based on flawed intelligence.

May said Britain and its allies had sought to use every diplomatic means to stop the use of chemical weapons, but had been repeatedly thwarted, citing a Russian veto of an independent investigation into the Douma attack at the U.N. Security Council this week.

"I think it is absolutely appropriate that the prime minister and the cabinet made this decision", he told Sky News.

She said speed was essential and that military action was in the national interest.

But the Cabinet's call for "action" to prevent further use of chemical weapons included no details on the method or timing of such strikes, while leaving open the possibility of other responses.

Britain's Defence Ministry said "very careful scientific analysis" had been applied to maximise the destruction of stockpiled chemicals while minimising any risk of contamination to surrounding areas.

"The Prime Minister said it was a further example of the erosion of worldwide law in relation to the use of chemical weapons, which was deeply concerning to us all".

Mr Corbyn said MPs should have been consulted before the strike and called on May to "publish in full the legal justification and basis for" the action.

Parliament is not due to reconvene until Monday, following its Easter recess.

Theresa May also said it had been "right and legal" to take action.

Formally, the prime minister has the right to go to war without approval from parliament, but a convention has been established in previous conflicts where MPs have a vote either before or shortly after military action begins.

The U.S. has about 2,000 troops on the ground in Syria as advisers to a makeshift group of anti-Islamic State fighters known as the Syrian Democratic Forces.

"Bombs won't save lives or bring about peace", Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the main opposition Labour Party, said in a statement.

The Green Party, which has one MP, said May had "trampled over parliamentary democracy" and demanded a vote in the House of Commons on the strikes.

Opposition Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable told the BBC that parliament "can and should be recalled immediately" to hold a vote on the latest possible action.
