Donald Trump echoes George W. Bush with Syria strike 'Mission Accomplished'

President Trump arrives to announce military strikes on Syria as new national security adviser John Bolton follows behind at the White House

"It is such a great Military term, it should be brought back", he wrote. Angus King said "it's impossible to say at this point" whether the United States' mission in Syria has been accomplished.

"I'm not going to say that they're going to be unable to continue to conduct a chemical attack in the future, but I suspect that they'll think long and hard about it based on the activities of last night", the lieutenant general said. Users on Twitter couldn't help but draw a parallel to President George W. Bush, who announced the end of major combat operations on the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in 2003.

He added, "The Syrian raid was so perfectly carried out, with such precision, that the only way the Fake News Media could demean was by my use of the term 'Mission Accomplished'". He said Syria's air defences were ineffective and that numerous more than 40 surface-to-air missiles fired by the Syrians were launched after the allied attack was over.

But British Prime Minister Theresa May said there was little doubt the Syrian government used a barrel bomb - large containers packed with fuel, explosives and scraps of metal - to deliver the chemicals at Douma. Nikki Haley on the other hand, the US ambassador in the United Nations, said that the United States remains, in a direct warning to Assad and his supporters against using chemical weapons. Bush addressed sailors aboard a Navy ship in May 2003 alongside a "Mission Accomplished" banner, just weeks before it became apparent that Iraqis had organized an insurgency that tied down US forces for years.

Later Sunday, Trump sent a letter to congressional leaders informing them in writing of his decision to order the strike. Instead, a coordinated and prolonged campaign to militarily destroy ISIS has been the focus of the US intervention, and Trump has vowed to withdraw the USA from the conflict once this has been achieved; to the dismay of many of his military advisors.

On Saturday, Trump celebrated the success of the strike on three targets in Syria in response to the alleged chemical weapons attack on civilians.

Trump tweeted on Thursday that he "would only join TPP if the deal were substantially better than the deal offered to Pres. The Japan-China Excessive-Stage Financial Dialogue was being held Monday in Tokyo for the primary time since August 2010.

The nighttime Syria assault was carefully limited to minimise civilian casualties and avoid direct conflict with Syria's key ally, Russia, but confusion arose over the extent to which Washington warned Moscow in advance.

She added that while the mission in Syria remains defeating the Islamic State, which has seen its grip weaken in the region in recent months, the US will not allow Assad to attack "innocent Syrian people". "I believe that we took the heart of it out with the attacks. But..." In the bigger picture other interests and objectives are at play, and the U.S.is using the plight of the Syrian people to legitimise military intervention, making way for a possible shift in the U.S.'s Syria policy if the situation demands it.

The U.S. -led operation won broad Western support.

"Is there ANYONE in the White House with an understanding of history?" he asked. And now you know the full story, ' he said. What happens next, she said, is up to Assad and to his Russian and Iranian allies.

Haley appeared on "Fox News Sunday" and CBS' "Face the Nation".
