Rahul Gandhi makes PM Modi's silence an issue as India awaits

AICC spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala addresses a press conference in New Delhi

Blaming the BJP for politicisation of Unnao and Kathau rape cases, the Congress on Saturday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for speaking very little on the incidents and not mention the involvement of his own party's people.

Earlier in the day, he thanked "thousands of men and women" who stood with him in protesting the rising acts of violence against girls and women and said their battle for justice would not be in vain.

Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi led a midnight march to India Gate on April 12 joined by his sister Priyanka and her husband Robert Vadra as also their children, in addition to scores of Congress leaders, party workers and others. But certain sections of the party privately wondered the political rationale behind Gandhi's midnight vigil when the rest of the country was sleeping, thereby, liming its visibility and impact. The BJP has already condemned the ministers' act, Lekhi said before going on to claim that the two were "misled and misguided" by some people.

The Congress was protesting the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu's Kathua district. "He is not taking action against his ministers who are trying to save the rape accused". What do you think about the growing violence against women & children?

Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid took to Twitter and said, ¿PM Modi reflects on what your ideology is doing o India.

Hitting back at the Prime Minister, who had lashed out at the Congress on Friday, Selja said the PM was only interested in doing politics over the legacy of the Dalit icon. Amid heightened public anger, the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar on Friday night on the directions of the Allahabad high court.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi today described the rape and killing of an 8-year-old girl in Kathua as "unimaginable brutality" that cannot go unpunished, and wondered how anybody can seek to protect the culprits.

Many were shouting slogans like "Modi Bhagao, Beti Bachao" as they held candles as a mark of protest.
