Gun rights supporters to stage rallies across country

Gun rights supporters rallied across the United States to counter a recent wave of student-led protests against gun violence.

Organizers are encouraging gun rights supporters to bring unloaded rifles to rallies at state capitols across the USA this weekend, pushing back against a wave of student-led gun violence protests that some see as a threat to the Second Amendment.

Gun rights activists with the National Constitutional Coalition of Patriotic Americans take part in a national rally aimed at pushing back against calls for stronger gun control measures outside the state Capitol Saturday in Albany, N.Y.

Saturday's protests came less than three weeks after hundreds of thousands marched in Washington, New York and elsewhere to demand tougher gun laws after the February 14 school shooting in Parkland, Fla., that killed 17.

Mark Perry of the Georgia Department of Public Safety confirmed Thursday that organizers were told they need to pay about $6,700 for security at a rally where the expected attendance is 500 people.

Atlanta rally organizer Chris Hill said his group still plans to show up but has no intention of paying. "Any restriction completely goes against our rights".

Peaceful protesters numbering in the hundreds gathered outside statehouses from ME to Wyoming to hear speakers warn that any restrictions on gun ownership or use could eventually lead to bans for law-abiding gun owners.

Gubernatorial candidates Sen. Garrett Mason, R-Lisbon Falls, and Gorham businessman Sean Moody also spoke, said Gulya, as did Sen.

The shootings have brought a call for gun control and rallies, including March for Our Lives in Helena that drew 1,000 people, mourning the loss of life and targeting groups such as the National Rifle Association and pro-gun politicians. But no one appeared to be armed on Saturday, heeding the directions of the rally organizers, said Capitol Police Chief Russell Gauvin.

"I wanted to explain why the bill will decrease the amount of crimes that are committed with guns that illegally purchased in IL", said organizer Sara Knizhnik.
