Germany expressed "serious evidence" of use of chemical weapons in Syria

Germany expressed

Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel are seeking to lock in a united front against Donald Trump's tariff threats by meeting in Berlin next week before they travel to Washington for separate talks with the US president, a French government official said.

He said Germany is in touch with France on the chemical attack in the town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta, which killed 78 civilians and injured hundreds of others.

On the night of 14 April, the President of the United States Donald trump in his address to the nation announced the start of missile attacks on Syria.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis called the strikes a "one-time shot" with no additional military action planned for now.

Germany did not participate in the air strikes, but backed them as a "necessary and appropriate" action to warn Syria against further use of chemical weapons, Merkel said on Saturday.

Chemical inspectors to begin work in Syria's Douma
Putin have suggested that the aim of these US -led airstrikes were essentially to prevent the OPCW from carrying out its work. The "proportional, precision, coordinated strike" destroyed the "heart" of the Syrian chemical weapons program, said Lt.

Merkel underlined that Germany would continue supporting all efforts at the UN Security Council and the work of global chemical weapons watchdog OPCW on investigating the chemical attacks in Syria.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Adebahr said Germany agreed with its allies that the use of chemical weapons must not go unpunished.

"Everything leads us to believe that (Assad) bears responsibility" for the Douma attack, Merkel said.

"Germany will undertake, in a determined way, diplomatic efforts to support this", Merkel said.

Germany's foreign minister said more pressure should be applied on Russian Federation over its support for President Bashar Al-Assad, hinting at possible non-military measures alongside threatened allied strikes on Syria.
