Chemical inspectors to begin work in Syria's Douma

Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl

The combined forces launched airstrikes on two chemical weapons facilities and a military command post in Syria on Friday night in retaliation for a chemical attack that left up 75 civilians dead last week.

Russian lawmaker Vladimir Dzhabarov said on Saturday that Russia was likely to call for a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss U.S., British and French air strikes on Syria, RIA news agency reported.

The "proportional, precision, coordinated strike" destroyed the "heart" of the Syrian chemical weapons program, said Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, director of the Joint Staff at the Pentagon, who was at the same briefing.

The Pentagon said it knew of no civilian casualties "at this time".

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based monitoring group, said in a statement on Saturday that Syrian government troops and their allies had taken-up positions inside Douma and now have complete control over the area. The U.S. war there dragged on for eight more years.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said her country supported the action, calling the strikes "necessary and appropriate".

War fetishists in Congress are already drooling for more and egging Trump to step things up.

About an hour after Trump finished speaking, the Pentagon said the wave of attacks was over and there were no reports of losses among us and allied forces involved in the attacks.

"By its actions, the USA is increasingly aggravating the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria, bringing sufferings to civilians and actually conniving at terrorists who have been tormenting the Syrian people for seven years and provoking a new wave of refugees from that country and the region as a whole", it said.

Nikki Haley, U.S. ambassador to the UN, defended the allied attacks on the suspected chemical weapons targets as "justified, legitimate, and proportionate", in response to a proposed Russian resolution to condemn the United States in an emergency session of the UN Security Council.

Branding last week's alleged chemical attack the "crimes of a monster", Trump announced the military action against President Bashar al-Assad's regime in a White House address late Friday, defying fierce warnings from Damascus ally Russian Federation.

"What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women, and children?" he asked.

"Very soon, very soon, we're coming out", Trump said to a crowd in Richfield, Ohio, on March 30. He thanked France and Britain via tweet, and then declared "Mission Accomplished". "In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed".

"When our president draws a red line, our president enforces a red line". Russian officials beyond Mr. Putin have suggested that the aim of these US -led airstrikes were essentially to prevent the OPCW from carrying out its work.

Bush, in October 2003, disavowed any connection with the "Mission Accomplished" message.
