Samsung sued for $3B for biometric patent infringement

Samsung, LG Mull Stopping LCD TV Production in China

"The company is likely to beef up efforts to gain more intellectual rights".

According to PACid, two United States patents (Patent 9,577,994 and 9,876,771) and one South Korean patent (named KR20110128567A) have been infringed upon. While Samsung has emerged unaffected from those ligitations, it has got to battle one more lawsuit. US Patent No. 9,577,994 and No. 9,876,771, and South Korean patent KR20110128567A are the patents covered in the lawsuit, and they pertain to technologies involving biometric authentication.

Samsung has been sued by USA -based data security firm PACid Technologies for allegedly infringing on two US patents and one Korean patent with its Galaxy smartphone biometric features.

The exams are considered so important that South Korea streamlines public transport and deploys law enforcement agencies during the period. The suit concerns three patents, believed to be related to the biometric security features of Samsung's recent Galaxy devices; specifically, the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S8 (and the Edge/Plus variants thereof). If found guilty of being aware of PACid's patents, Samsung stands to pay up to three times the damage amount per unit sold.

Federation Internationale de Football Association president admits VAR could cause controversy at the World Cup
Qatar now has plans to build eight stadiums, whereas bidders for the 48-team 2026 tournament have been told they need 12 venues. The tournament has already been shortened to 28 days after it was moved to November-December to avoid the heat of summer.

PACid calls itself a data security company, but pundits discussing this case have dubbed it a patent troll.

The news arrives via The Investor and ETNews, which cited a complaint filed with the Texas Eastern District Court on April 6.

In the past, we have seen multiple companies like PACid allege big tech companies to have infringed their patents. There is a possibility that lawsuit against Samsung could end up being just another addition to its laundry list of lawsuits against large corporations.
