Ball tampering saga: David Warner 'developed' plan according to Cricket Australia findings

Bancroft, who was caught on camera attempting to use sandpaper to change the condition of the ball during the third Test against South Africa, has been banned for nine months.

David Warner will never be considered for captaincy after serving his one-year ban, Cricket Australia announced on Wednesday.

Cricket Australia's CEO James Sutherland continued to defend coach Darren Lehmann in the ball-tampering saga.

The squad has been bolstered by batsmen Matthew Renshaw, Glenn Maxwell and Joe Burns, but they will barely have time to acclimatise before Friday's fourth test in Johannesburg.

"To hear that the Australian cricket team had been involved in pre-mediated cheating is something that is embarrassing". The CA boss's press conference created huge furore even as the sanctions were read out for Smith, Warner and Bancroft, who left for Australia on Wednesday.

Sutherland also said his job was not on the line and that he will continue in his position despite the controversy CA find themselves in because of the acts of Warner‚ Smith and Bancroft.

"Under an initiative proposed by Cricket Australia - and driven by Waugh and his then deputy and ODI captain Ricky Ponting with the endorsement of the national women's team skipper, Belinda Clark - Australia's leading men's players set down the standards of behaviour and values they believed they should uphold".

I empathise, and then some, with the widespread cynicism over the "finding" - at least at this juncture in the not necessarily ziplocked CA inquiry process - that impropriety stopped dead with Smith, Warner and Bancroft.

What's at stake in gerrymandering case in front of the Supreme Court?
The Maryland challenge focuses on just one congressional district, drawn by Democrats, on a First Amendment challenge. There appeared little dispute among the justices that the Maryland district's lines were drawn with partisan intent.

Bancroft, 25, playing in only his eighth Test, was charged with "knowledge of the existence of, and being party to, the plan to attempt to artificially alter the condition of the ball using sandpaper", and "carrying out instructions to attempt to artificially alter the condition of the ball".

It has also been revealed that Cameron Bancroft falsely claimed that he used sticky tape in ball tampering.

"The whole opportunity for us going forward now is something we can learn from and something we can try to control (is) how we are seen going forward by our Australian public, and become the team that we want to become and they want us to be seen as".

The evidence from the TV cameras was overwhelming and Smith and Bancroft came out after play to confess to their roles in the plot to reporters. Today they have travelled home to Australia.

Smith's next game for Australia will nearly certainly be a warm-up game for next year's World Cup in England, which is followed by an away Ashes campaign.

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan agrees with Warne that the punishments were too severe, although he believes CA had no other option than to make an example of the trio. "Darren wasn't involved and didn't know of the plan". The scandal also cost Smith and Warner participation in the upcoming IPL.

"I understand and share the anger and disappointment of Australian fans", Sutherland said. Earlier Warner had stepped down Warner as captain of SunRisers Hyderabad.
