Thousands urge gun control across U.S. and Canada

March for Our Lives rally in New York

March For our Lives has a step-by-step guide to help in the planning process.

Protesters gather for the March for Our Lives rally along Pennsylvania Avenue on March 24 in Washington, D.C. Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators, including students, teachers and parents gathered in Washington for the anti-gun violence rally organized by survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on February 14 that left 17 dead and 17 others wounded.

"It was especially important to my family and sister", Madeleine Mathias, a junior in the College of Arts & Sciences, said. On Feb. 22, she and her peers led her high school in a Remembrance Walk to honor the lives lost in the shooting only six days before.

"I'm in D.C., so Joaquin didn't die for nothing".

Other celebrities who took part in the event were Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson.

Birmingham added that it was nice that there were no politicians who spoke. "There should never be a time that we go to school and fear for our lives and that seems like a recurring theme in America now, and we need to stop that".

Standing before vast crowds from Washington to Los Angeles to Parkland, the speakers - almost all of them students, some still in elementary school - delivered an anguished and defiant message: They are "done hiding" from gun violence, and will "stop at nothing" to get politicians to finally prevent it. Most of the speakers were young people, supporting the fact that the movement was largely coordinated by young people. "I guess I don't try to go out much, because I see what could happen", said Armando Martinez, a senior at Capital City Public Charter School.

Among the teen representatives who took center stage at the rally was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s granddaughter Yolanda Renee King.

"I am here today to represent the African American girls whose stories don't make the front page of every national newspaper", she began, addressing hundreds of thousands of protestors in Washington DC with more composure, eloquence and awareness than your average world leader. More than 800 related events are taking place around the world to call for legislative action to address school safety and gun violence.

"Every week you hear about a new shooting and nothing is done about it", McCartney said. All across the nation. We must track down where these guns are coming from and limit access to semi-automatic weapons to see real change in all communities - not just the wealthy ones.

In addition to the students, political figures in Santa Clarita also made speeches, each explaining their own political agenda and what they hope, will bring voters out to the polls in order to start the change.

Senator Mark Warner, another Virginia Democrat, declared in the wake of the student-led movement that he would now support bans on such rifles and magazines, which he had voted against in recent years.
