The Trèbes Attack: How Did It Happen? Who Is The Suspect?

A Police Officer’s Faith May Explain Why He Traded Places with a Hostage

A series of attacks hit Trebes on Friday when a 26-year-old Moroccan national, Redouane Lakdim, who was living in Carcassonne and reportedly obtained French citizenship in 2015, hijacked a auto, wounding the driver and killing the passenger, drove to Trebes where he took people hostage at a supermarket.

The bishop of the nearby medieval city of Carcassonne, Alain Planet, is leading Sunday's mass at the Saint-Etienne-de-Trebes church in the town of Trebes.

The late Arnaud Beltrame, the gendarme who voluntarily took the place of a hostage during a deadly supermarket siege in southwestern France on Friday, March 23, 2018.

Poussier described by "what an idiot" the gendarme who "had fallen as a hero", as French President Emmanuel Macron said.

Friday's attacker was identified by authorities as Redouane Lakdim, a 25-year-old Moroccan-born French national from the city of Carcassonne, not far from Trebes, the tranquil town of about 5000 people where he struck on Friday afternoon.

He shot dead two people at the supermarket after earlier opening fire on passengers in a vehicle, killing one of them, and injuring a police officer in nearby Carcassonne.

France has suffered a series of major Islamist attacks over the past three years, including the November 2015 attacks that killed 130 in Paris.

French police officers cordon off an area during the hostage-taking in Trebes.

Supermarket boss Samia Menassi, whose store remains closed and surrounded by police tape, recalled hearing the first gunshots.

Parents Beat Teen Who Refused Arranged Marriage, Cops Say
After questioning the teen, police learned of some "quite disturbing" details that had led to the teen running away from home. Salazar also said the Federal Bureau of Investigation , which was helping the police in the case, could bring more charges.

Police arrested Stephane Poussier at his home in Dives-sur-Mer, northwest France, yesterday after he sent two tweets welcoming the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Beltrame.

Mr Lakdim, who was armed with a gun, knife and homemade explosive devices according to a security source, was shot dead as police moved in to end his siege of the Super U supermarket where he had holed up after a shooting spree in Carcassonne. "I think of my friend Remi Fraisse", Poussier said on Twitter, referring to an environmental activist killed by a stun grenade fired by police during a 2014 protest over a dam.

Officials told reporters that police had managed to get some of the 50 hostages out of the supermarket but that the gunman held one woman as a human shield.

He was reportedly known for his Salafi leanings, as well as his criminal past, although, according the authorities, all of the crimes he had engaged in were petty crimes with no real threat of radicalization.

The Islamic State militant group on Friday claimed responsibility for the attack.

U.S. President Donald Trump condemned "the violent actions of the attacker and anyone who would provide him support". "But we found no evidence and warning signs of a possible radicalization" Mr. Molins told the press.

Another woman who was also allegedly connected to the attacker was taken into custody on Friday.

The assailant was killed.
