Sensex extends slide for 5th day, sheds 253 pts, Nifty below 10100

The Sensex shrugged of its early losses, with IT and telecom stocks leading the recovery, and touched high of 33,102.74. The NSE Nifty too was trading in the positive terrain at 10.30 am, trading 0.19% or 19.35 points up at 10,113.60. The BSE index dipped further early on bu recovered soon as it had moved to green by 9.40 am.

Mumbai- Amid volatility, the key Indian equity indices on Tuesday provisionally closed in the green with healthy buying in IT, Teck (technology, media and entertainment) and auto stocks. The markets have closed in the red for the past five sessions, with the BSE Sensex shedding 994 points. At 10.50 a.m, the Sensex was trading up 102.51 points or 0.31% at 33,025.63 with 21 components gaining. The NSE Nifty also opened 45.15 points, or 0.44%, lower at 10,049.10.

Investors stayed cautious as they braced for new Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's first policy meeting starting later in the day and amid concerns that US President Donald Trump could impose additional protectionist trade measures. It was followed by TCS 6.89 per cent, Adani Ports 2.36 per cent, Kotak Bank 2.17 per cent, L&T 1.75 per cent, Tata Motors DVR 1.35 per cent, Power Grid 1.33 per cent, Reliance 1.27 per cent, ONGC 1.25 per cent and HDFC 1.25 per cent.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan dropped 0.2 per cent. Japan's Nikkei fell 1.0 per cent.

The gauge lost 741.94 points in the previous four sessions.

MSCI's main 47-country world stock index fell 1.1 percent in afternoon trading after European stocks dipped and benchmark US indexes declined.
