March Madness 2018: Dude, WTH happened to your bracket?

March Madness 2018: Dude, WTH happened to your bracket?

Kansas State didn't have to play Virginia.

While the Wildcats for the most part were able to cruise for easy wins over the Radford Highlanders and Alabama Crimson Tide, the team will face one of their toughest tasks of the season on Friday night in Boston when they take on the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Sweet 16.

What about the defending champion North Carolina Tar Heels? So, say goodbye to the 135-0 record the No. 1-seeds had over the No. 16-seeds all these years.

MI over Texas A&M: Moe Wagner has a big game for John Beilein.

West Virginia, and Carter in particular, look like they mean business with the way they played this opening weekend.

This is where there was the most March Madness.

More than 55 percent had the very first game wrong when Rhode Island beat Oklahoma in overtime.

It's turned into a nutty, once-in-a-generation kind of ride. The ACC also has four teams in the Sweet 16, while the Big Ten and SEC have two each.

Schools, coaches and the NCAA, however, continue to bankroll every March - the NCAA will make almost $800 million from TV alone during the course of the tournament, with that number set to increase in the near future - yet the players who everybody gets to know and love receive next to nothing. Not only was Virginia a No. 1 seed but also the No. 1 team overall and UMBC did it in dominating fashion, winning by 20.

Self said the plan was to rest him Sunday and Monday, practice Tuesday through Thursday, and be ready to go against a fifth-seeded Clemson team that ran roughshod over No. 4 seed Auburn. That mindset paid off and put them on the map.

UMBC's success story contributed to the messy, unprecedentedly jumbled bracket in the South Region, where the highest-remaining seed is No. 5 Kentucky.

That's a total of 62 out of 151 who lost their national champion in the first weekend of play, which is pretty embarrassing when you consider that a person trying to lose this contest, and entered in it only for the goal of being able to track the progress of the tournament and write about it, picked Villanova to win the whole thing, never mind that it could just as easily have been Virginia given that no further thought was given to that idea than "hey, both those schools start with V and are No. 1 seeds".

Seventh-seeded Nevada added to that by matching the second-biggest comeback in tournament history to beat No. 2 seed Cincinnati 75-73 after trailing by 22 points in the second half.

'That locker room right now, I've never seen anything like it in my life. And I have seen incredible looks of disappointment or joy on the faces of people who don't even know what a five-second violation is. It happened twice in a three-day span in Charlotte: UMBC routed No. 1 Virginia 74-54 and Texas A&M thumped No. 2 North Carolina 86-65. It left coach Roy Williams with the most lopsided tournament loss of his Hall of Fame career.

It's no surprise where the Big 12 finds itself heading into the Sweet 16. As ESPN illustrates with a new story and infographic, college basketball and football coaches are the highest-paid employees in nearly every state. And you can be, too: Check out our Round-by-Round challenge, or print out a fresh bracket updated through the Sweet 16.

South: No. 5 Kentucky vs.

I think Nevada out-scraps Loyola and moves onto the Elite Eight.

Kentucky over Loyola Chicago: This time it's Gilgeous-Alexander and Hamidou Diallo on the wing.

In the same bracket, the No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes were reluctantly silenced for the remainder of this season by No. 4 Gonzaga Bulldogs 90-84.

No. 1 Kansas vs. Villanova is 8-2-1 against the spread at a neutral site.

The Big East has nothing to hang their heads for after the first weekend. When four 1's, four 2's, four 3's, a pair of 4's, a 5 and a 12 made the Sweet 16. "We don't just want to go to the Sweet 16".
