Suspect in SUNY Binghamton nursing student's murder arrested in Nicaragua

Haley Anderson was a senior at the State University of New York at Binghamton

The suspect in last week's Binghamton University murder has been arrested in Nicaragua.

Anderson, a nursing student at the State University of NY at Binghamton, was from Westbury, Long Island.

Orlando Tercero, 22, was taken into custody in an unspecified place in Nicaragua and was being handed over to judicial authorities, National Police Commissioner Francisco Diaz told Canal 4 television.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, Haley Anderson's roommate said she found her friend's body in Tercero's bed on Friday after she went searching for her.

Tercero is being transferred to the prison in El Chipote, which is about 40 miles southwest of the capitol, Managua. Anderson's death was ruled a homicide, but police haven't said how or why she was killed.

Speculation on Why Ronda Rousey Missed Monday's RAW
Heartbroken at first, Jax wiped a tear away and rushed to the locker room, where she unleashed hell on the anything in her path. Rousey's last two UFC appearances ended with back-to-back knockouts.

US authorities indicated Tercero as a person of interest in the murder on Monday, suspecting he fled to Nicaragua, where some of his relatives live.

"The victim and male student had a previous domestic/romantic relationship".

Tercero is a United States citizen and was also studying nursing. A local station in the country reportedly showed an image of a Nicaraguan passport with his name and photo, according to the Associated Press.

With no formal extradition treaty with the US, the question now becomes whether Nicaragua will extradite Tercero back to NY to face potential murder charges.

It's unknown at this time if Tercero will be brought back to the U.S.
