National school walkout: Thousands of students to protest gun violence

The Director of Communications says middle and high school students will be allowed to walk out of their classes between 10 a.m. and 10:17 a.m. Wednesday morning, but they are encouraged to stay indoors for their safety.

The nationally organized walkouts, most of which will last 17 minutes in symbolic tribute to the Florida victims, are unprecedented in recent American history.

Haywood County Schools have chosen to work with student leaders to make the experience a meaningful one.

Arizona legislators recently refused to take up the bill to ban bump stocks, and a year ago, Gov. Doug Ducey signed a law that forbids cities from requiring background checks for gun sales. Students should check with their school's policies about leaving school grounds without permission before walking off campus.

Duval County Public Schools and the St. Johns County School District tell Action News Jax they've been working with their students.

In some districts where walkouts were banned, students said they would go ahead with a protest anyway.

"If it don't stop now, it's going to keep happening", said Ahmad Gordon, a sixth grade student at Citizens Leadership Academy's East Campus. In some schools, students can address letters to their legislators seeking stricter gun measures or can register to vote. The school should celebrate independently minded individuals who stand up peacefully for what they believe in and think critically about the world around them.

Waiting game: Browns still not sure of Joe Thomas' future
Whatever reasonable doubts Thomas had at the beginning of the offseason have certainly been altered at this point in time. Even after adding three players in a series of trades this week, the Browns have $82 million in cap space .

Carvalho is expected to join the walkout at iPrep Academy in Miami.

In Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Texas, some lawyers said they will provide free legal help to students who are punished. She also created an infographic to share with her classmates containing statistics about gun violence as it relates to kids and schools.

Students are also using social media though, to communicate with each other to coordinate and promote the walk out.

"We want to talk to Smith & Wesson about how they are prepared to be a part of the solution, which includes shouldering the costs that our communities are bearing - both the human costs and the financial costs - of what their product does", she said. The shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School forced teachers and students into emotional discussions.

The March for Our Lives rally for school safety is expected to draw hundreds of thousands to the nation's capital on March 24, its organizers said. Administrators made it clear they are neither for, nor against students protesting, and would not stop the students' First Amendment rights.

"I just want to do what I can to end it", she said. "We need to identify these troubled youths early and we need to interdict before they turn violent".
