Malcolm Butler To Sign With Titans For Five Years, $61 Million

Dion Lewis 49ers

The now-former New England Patriots cornerback will sign with the Tennessee Titans when National Football League free agency opens Wednesday, according to multiple reports Tuesday.

With Aqib Talib traded to the Los Angeles Rams and Richard Sherman signing with the San Francisco 49ers, teams are turning their attention to another high profile cornerback on the market - Malcolm Butler. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the impending signing. In essence, Belichick decided that safety Jordan Richards (first half) and cornerback Johnson Bademosi (second half) gave the Patriots a better chance to win as the sixth defensive back in the dime package over Butler, who had played 98 percent of the defensive snaps in the regular season.

Throughout his tenure in New England, Butler tallied 209 combined tackles, 50 defended passes, eight interceptions and two sacks. The Titans' head coach (Mike Vrabel) and general manager (Jon Robinson) also are alumni of the Patriots organization.

A player with his resume will certainly have suitors, and thus far, at least three teams have been reported to have their eyes on the 28-year-old. Despite Butler's benching, he's a bona fide starter, and now he has the contract to prove it.

Winter weather advisory in effect for Triad
Root said that between one and three inches of snow are expected to fall between Monday night and Tuesday morning. By 8AM, we may have at least a few inches of snow on the ground, and it will continue to quickly pile up.

Butler returned to the Patriots in 2017 and had a self-described up-and-down season that culminated with Belichick's shocking decision not to play him on defense in Super Bowl LII.

The structure of the contract is expected to be a five-year, $61 million pact with at least $30 million guaranteed.

The Patriots are scheduled to visit the Titans this season.
