Broncos going after former UH quarterback Case Keenum

The Denver Broncos are hoping to repeat the success they had with Peyton Manning in pursuing another free agent fix at quarterback.

When the free agency period officially begins Wednesday afternoon, former Vikings quarterback Case Keenum plans to sign with Denver, NFL sources confirmed. Denver decided against committing to the player-friendly Kirk Cousins contract structure, shifted quickly to Keenum. He authored the league's most breathtaking play, completing a walkoff scoring pass to receiver Stefon Diggs for a 47-yard touchdown, the "Minnesota Miracle" knocking the New Orleans Saints out of the playoffs. His market will likely come down to the Vikings, Jets or possibly the Cardinals.

The Broncos balked at Cousins' bargaining starting point Monday. Kubiak coached Keenum for two seasons (2013-2014) when Kubiak was the Texans head coach.

The Broncos went 5-11 last season and have missed the playoffs each of the past two years after winning Super Bowl 50 in the 2015 season.

Speculation on Why Ronda Rousey Missed Monday's RAW
Heartbroken at first, Jax wiped a tear away and rushed to the locker room, where she unleashed hell on the anything in her path. Rousey's last two UFC appearances ended with back-to-back knockouts.

Keenum, 30, is coming off a career year in Minnesota, where he started 14 out of 16 regular-season games in place of the injured Sam Bradford. Sitting at No. 5, he is very much in play for one of the five big-time talents (Jackson, Darnold, Rosen, Mayfield, Allen) and could provide his team the comfort of a short-term quality starter alongside the promise of a long-term rookie option. We just have to figure out a way to get it right.

"I still think that we're not too far away", Elway said earlier in the offseason. Justin Pugh and Weston Richburg are among the best offensive linemen remaining in free agency and can both play two different positions. This figure and the term of the contract - unlike with Cousins - should not preclude the Broncos from drafting a quarterback fifth overall if they choose to go in that direction.

Keenum played in two fewer games than Cousins past year and finished just 546 yards behind the former Washington quarterback.

"There were some things we should have done differently that we didn't do".
