Southampton should replace Pellegrino with Mark Hughes - Robbie Savage

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier believes Mauricio Pellegrino was sacked because of his negative style of football.

It has left Southampton just one point and one place above the Premier League drop zone with eight games of the season remaining and there's every chance that they could slip out of the top flight if results don't dramatically improve.

The defeat at Newcastle was one of the low points of the season for the Saints, with Pellegrino saying after the game: "I haven't seen my team compete in this way this season, without the spirit you need to compete at this level".

Hughes, who was sacked by Stoke six days into the New Year, made 52 Premier League appearances for Southampton between 1998 and 2000 under Dave Jones then Glenn Hoddle, scoring just two goals before moving on to Everton.

"We would like to place on record our thanks to Mauricio, Carlos and Xavier for their efforts during their time with Southampton, and wish them well for the future", the statement said.

Jose Mourinho Rips Into Former Crystal Palace Boss Frank De Boer
I said that before the Liverpool match when many of you were maybe not expecting him to start. He was saying its not good for Marcus Rashford to have a coach like me.

"The club will look to appoint a new management team as soon as possible, with the search for a replacement already under way".

Pellegrino, only appointed in the summer, paid the price for Southampton's alarming recent form.

The team, who are now one point outside the relegation zone, have taken on the form of their coach in recent months in that they've become nearly entirely anonymous, with no recognisable approach or identity to speak of.

He has also managed Wales, Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers Fulham and Queens Park Rangers - and is behind only Arsène Wenger, Sir Alex Ferguson, Harry Redknapp, David Moyes and Sam Allardye on the list of most Premier League games.

Mark Hughes has been named as the "leading candidate" for the vacant Southampton manager's position, not Marco Silva.
