Independent sex abuse inquiry will not fully investigate Telford scandal, MP fears

Becky Watson

Now, aged 47, the victim said she told her doctor of the abuse, but her doctor said she was mentally ill and should take medication.

"If you look at somewhere like Telford where abuse was going on for 40 years, if you were a police officer, and you started your career at the age of 25, and you retire at the age of 65, you've spent your entire career letting people down." he told the Daily Telegraph. The abuse began when she was only 11 years old.

The Sunday Mirror claimed it had diaries that revealed her torment at being made to sleep around, while her mother, Torron, told the newspaper her daughter had been abused since the age of 11 but that police failed to properly investigate.

An 18-year-old Asian man groomed a 14-year-old girl in 1985.

She said: "I was scared my family would die like Lucy's".

Appearing on Good Morning Britain under the assumed name of Holly, the Telford abuse victim was speaking out as the scandal continues to unravel. Still, he was never arrested or charged for child sex crimes.

Mrs Jackson, 72, added: 'Lucy would climb out of windows in order to get out if she was grounded.

Despite the horrors of high-profile sex rings in Rochdale and Rotherham gaining national attention, authorities in Telford repeatedly failed to address the pedophile rings rife within the their own community.

It follows new newspaper claims of widespread abuse of teenage girls dating back to the 1980s. Lucy's behaviour fits that picture.

Rebecca Watson was 13 when she died in March 2002 after falling from the bonnet of a auto near her youth club, in what driver Ahmed Nawaz claimed was a "prank" which went tragically wrong.

Out of 12 - mostly unconnected - victims who spoke to investigators from the Mirror, more than 70 abusers were accused.

Nawaz, who was 21, at the time of the teenager's death, was jailed for three years and banned from driving for five years after admitting reckless driving.

Dino Nocivelli, a specialist child abuse solicitor, said the survivors deserved an enquiry.

"The scale of the abuse uncovered in Telford - a population of 170,000 - is feared to be the most brutal and long-running of all", it said. Others were left addicted to drugs and scarred for life.

Telford's Conservative MP, Lucy Allan, has previously called for a Rotherham-style inquiry into the allegations and called the latest reports "extremely serious and shocking".

An estimate of the number of victims was calculated with the help of Professor Liz Kelly, from the Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit at London Metropolitan University, who reviewed the Mirror's figures.

In 2016-17 the local authority received 337 contacts raising concerns about child sexual exploitation relating to 224 young people, more than half of whom were referred to child protection teams.

'All (reports) have been investigated with rigour.
