Sir Ken Dodd dies aged 90

Sir Ken Dodd passed away on Sunday

He married Anne Jones, his partner of 40 years, on Friday at their home in the Liverpool suburb of Knotty Ash, which was also the one he was born in.

Sir Ken had received a knighthood at Buckingham Palace in 2017. A man who gave us much joy. "That's my Ken Dodd story".

The 90-year-old passed away just days after leaving hospital and marrying his partner of 40 years.

Liverpool comic Les Dennis wrote: 'Losing Ken means losing the last music hall great. I have a lot to thank you for.

Sir Ken, known for his unruly hair and teeth, performed his very last show just months ago, at The Auditorium in the Liverpool Echo Arena, in his native city, on December 28. RIP Sir Ken Dodd'. The human tickling stick is gone and it's a sadder world.

Irish comedian Dara O Briain remembered seeing Sir Ken at one of his "incredible five hour shows".

He said: "He was an education to watch and, afterwards, at 1.30 am, he had beers with me in the dressing room and talked showbiz".

Other tributes came from actor John Challis, who played Boycie in comedy television series Only Fools And Horses, and Hollyoaks actor Annie Wallace, who described him as a "true son of lovely Liverpool". "Anne is obviously very upset".

He tweeted: "So sorry to hear we have lost Ken Dodd.I met him once and I've never forgotten it.Gawd bless 'im". I'm privileged to have been there for him and he for me.

Born in Knotty Ash, Liverpool, Lancashire, on November 8 1927, it was around the age of 14 he began to discover a love of entertaining after seeing an advertisement in a comic book which read: 'Fool your teachers, amaze your friends-send 6d in stamps and become a ventriloquist!'.

And fellow morning TV personality Piers Morgan described Ken as "one of the greatest comedians Britain has ever produced". "It's absolutely awesome", added Holmes.

Fans also paid tribute, hailing his live performances as the "funniest 5 hours of my life".
