Clooney was nominated for best actor for his role as a "fixer" for a corporate law firm in the film Michael Clayton.

A film with a female perspective has not won best picture since Million Dollar Baby in 2005 and coming of age tale Lady Bird would be a popular victor with supporters of the #MeToo and Time's Up campaigns demanding justice for sexual misconduct victims and fair treatment for women in the workplace. While some winners can be thoughtful, amusing or endearing in their acceptance speeches, others take the opportunity to try to steal the show by delivering orations that seem an extension of their acting.
